Today I was working on deconstructing further classical paintings. The three above are based on Samson and Delilah and Titian’s Death of Aecteon. As always if I start with a figure, say Aecteon, I tend to fall over by placing the figure first then have to fit the rest of the painting around it – this never works!!! Far better to hold that figure very loosely in my mind, and be ready to scrub it out and start all over several times to get to a feeling or an expression of the subject rather than a description of it. Needless to say, I do a lot of scrubbing off the paint, teasing, pushing and brushing to find something I could never have imagined!
